(ISC)2® (“ISC-squared”), the non-profit global leader in educating and certifying information security professionals throughout their careers, today announced the launch of its online Cyber Security Awareness Resource Center in support of U.S. National Cyber Security Awareness Month this October and other awareness initiatives around the globe.
In support of the Month and the Hong Kong Clean PC Day security promotion campaign, (ISC)² worked with the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to localize and translate a Chinese version of (ISC)2’s brochure titled “A Safety Guide for World Wide Websters”.
The OGCIO plans to print and distribute the localized and translated brochure to the community in Hong Kong. The brochure is also available for the public to access and download at www.infosec.gov.hk. Apart from the Chinese version of the brochure, the Resource Center houses free security awareness materials, such as posters, flyers, brochures, presentations and games. Provided by (ISC)²-certified members, representing preeminent information security experts from corporate, government and academic arenas spanning Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America, the materials are available for public download at www.isc2.org/csa.
Supported by the U.S. Congress and coordinated by the U.S. National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), the goal of National Cyber Security Awareness Month is to heighten public awareness of the critical role each citizen plays in protecting information assets. With recent studies attributing as much as 60 percent of all computer security breaches to basic user errors, there is growing emphasis on educating end users on the importance of security best practices.
“With such a high percentage of data breaches stemming from human error, focusing on people and their behavior should be a key element of any effective security program,” said Ed Zeitler, CISSP, executive director of (ISC)2. “We’re proud to offer our over 50,000 information security-certified members worldwide a vehicle to share their vast expertise with the public so they can empower and protect themselves. At the same time, we hope the tools in the Resource Center will help make security education effective and fun.”
(ISC)² supports cyber security awareness initiatives around the globe on a year-round basis. For instance, in the UK, (ISC)² member volunteers have given presentations on Internet safety to more than 3,000 students in the past year using, among other tools, the brochure for teenagers, versions of which have also been localized for Malaysia. To download various versions of the brochure, or for more information about (ISC)²’s worldwide cyber security awareness efforts, please visit www.isc2.org/awareness.
