San Francisco International Airport opened fast-pass security lanes Monday at its domestic terminals, allowing fliers who hold Clear cards to bypass long lines at security checkpoints.
The airport is the 11th to accept the cards, which allow travelers who pay the $99.95 annual membership fee to use separate lanes after showing their identity cards. Mineta San Jose International began accepting the cards in January; other airports where cards are accepted include New York's JFK; Newark, N.J.; Reno; Cincinnati; and Indianapolis.
Clear lanes at San Francisco open at 4:30 a.m. daily and close at either 11 p.m. or midnight. Lanes will open at the airport's international terminal in October, according to Verified Identity Pass (www.flyclear.com), the company that operates the program in San Francisco and San Jose.
LaGuardia Airport in New York is expected to open Clear lanes later this month.
Clear card members undergo extensive background checks that allow them to use separate lanes at airport security areas. Iris or fingerprint images are compared to information on each card, although travelers must still pass through metal-detection machines.
