Lessons for Las Vegas from the Experience of 9/11 at Radio City Music Hall in New York
[author:John Laub Public time:Sep 15, 2007]

(Las Vegas) George Haskell will speak on “Lessons for Las Vegas from the Experience of 9/11 at Radio City Music Hall in New York" to the Las Vegas CEO-CFO Group on October 26, 2007 at the noon luncheon. Haskell was the Director for Security of Radio City Music Hall for ten years. Radio City Music Hall become a target for terrorist activity and was listed as one of the most likely spots for a terrorist incident due to its name recognition and its high concentration of people at its events. Haskell and his security crew caught suspicious individuals video-taping the concert hall, others suspects were caught using a vendor’s hot dog cart to get close to the hall and numerous other suspicious activities.

Haskell believes that the hotels in Las Vegas need to increase their security procedures to prevent such terrorist incidents from happening at a Las Vegas hotel. Recently, Las Vegas has seen two shooting incidents and one car bombing. In May 2007 an individual was blown up in the Luxor Hotel Parking garage when he removed a suspicious package that was placed on his car. The package was a bomb and it exploded, killing the employee. The explosion was first reported as a possible terrorist incident until it was discovered to be a fight over a girlfriend. Two months later, in July 2007, a suicidal gunman took 16 shots in the New York-New York Hotel, wounding four customers. The gunman was wrestled to the ground by several patrons in the casino. The following month in August 2007 an individual involved in an argument at Caesars Palace shot two individuals. The gunman was able to get away. Haskell finds these events disturbing, but more importantly, he believes that these incidents show that Las Vegas is vulnerable to a terrorist attack.

Haskell’s talk will cover the steps that Las Vegas hotels can take to prevent terrorist activities from occurring. He will be speaking at the October 26, 2007 luncheon of the Las Vegas CEO-CFO Group at McCormick & Schmicks. For more information: www.ceo-cfogroup.com.
