Mobile phones have become increasingly popular over the last 5 years and are now an integral part of our everyday lives. The functions on a phone have moved from just making simple voice calls and sending text messages to taking pictures, browsing the web, picking up email and even banking. The latest campaign from the Mobile Industry Crime Action Forum, which includes the police and the five major UK networks, claims that 80% of mobile phones will be blocked within 48 hours. This action does not protect the user from abuse to the sensitive data that is held on handsets in this day and age. The blocking of the handset is also only available to the home network leaving users potentially liable for 1,000’s of pounds of call costs whilst roaming.
Identity theft in the UK costs the economy an estimated £1.7 billion a year and evidence suggests fraudsters are getting more and more sophisticated in their techniques. There is no doubt that information held on mobile phones can greatly assist with identity theft.
