New Use For Cell Phones [author:zyk06 Public time:May 5, 2007] |

Researchers in Washington are looking into the possibility of outfitting cell phones with devices that can detect chemical, biological and radiological agents.
The effort is its early stages with officials of the Department of Homeland Security talking to phone companies about the possibility, USA Today reports.
Since the 9/11 attacks the government has spent billions of dollars putting sensors along borders, at airports and in mass transit stations.
Because fixed sensors can't be placed everywhere, Homeland Security's Advanced Research Projects Agency has been looking into other possibilities.
Rolf Dietrich, deputy director of the agency, says using cell phones would be "a really, really neat thing."
"If it's successful, it'll change the way chemical, biological and radiation detection is done," Dietrich says.
Since many cell phones are already linked to the Global Positioning System, adding detectors would give them the capability of transmitting a location and time if a dangerous agent is detected.
