Australian information security specialist Lync Software has launched Lync RMS, a simple-to-use software program that reduces the danger of information loss by turning data security on its head.
Rather than just restricting devices that connect to a network, Lync RMS equips organizations to control what data types can be transferred to removable media such as iPods, Smartphone’s & PDAs.
For example, an organization can use Lync RMS to restrict the movement of critical information types such as databases and Microsoft Office Documents, while allowing more secure PDF documents, as well as benign music and audio files, to be transferred between the network and removable media.
Lync Software CEO Kym Welsby said increasing global compliance regulation was forcing businesses to know what devices were connecting to their networks. “More importantly, it is vital for them to control the information that is leaking from their organisations on these devices,” he said.
“USB and mobile devices have become a natural extension of business networks, but proliferation of these devices has created a whole set of security risks and corporate governance problems globally.”
Lync Software is the Australian developer of innovative security solutions. Already installed in over 200 organizations globally, Lync RMS technology enables enterprises to reduce the risks created by the proliferation of removable media devices such as iPods, PDAs, smartphones and digital cameras.
The launch of Lync RMS enables organizations and users to enjoy the benefits of using removable media devices, while ensuring corporate network security is maintained. Like rival products, Lync RMS can create a copy of files transferred to removable media (file shadowing), with the added advantage that it can choose which information types to copy, dramatically reducing the data that must be stored.
As Lync RMS is tightly integrated with Active Directory in Windows, device access and file rules can be set by user, groups or organizations. Detailed logs are created for permitted and blocked file transactions, including source and destination directories and file properties.
Comprehensive reports enable management to see exactly what file transactions have occurred between the networks and removable media. The combination of file control, audit and shadowing make Lync RMS an ideal solution to satisfy compliance requirements imposed by regulations such as Sarbanes Oxley, HIPPA and GLBA.
As well as controlling outbound information, Lync RMS can control what is entering the network from removable media. Without restricting legitimate use of these productivity enhancing devices, Lync’s unique file control technology can protect the network from potentially harmful files (exe, sys and dll) while allowing legitimate information such as PDF files and PowerPoint presentations.
Mr. Welsby said mobile devices created a gaping security hole unless they were managed properly. “For example, during the fir
