Hackerstorm.com Security Tool Proving Popular [author:www.hackerstorm.com Public time:Aug 27, 2006] |

Since the launch of Hackerstorm.com's vulnerability database tool in 2005, there have been over 4000 downloads. Whats more impressive is that there has been no promotion of this tool, it was produced purely for convienience and through 'word of mouth' amongst professionals, it has gained in popularity.
The tools populairty is due to the fact that it allows IT and network security professionals to view thousands of vulnerabilites offline on their PC and laptop without an internet connection.
Tim Mehmet, author if the tool comments: "many security professionals find themselves in situations where they need to quickly lookup vendor or technical issues such as during a security demo, during a meeting or whilst performing a security audit or penetration test. Often, there is no connectivity immediately available to the internet and our tool is designed to overcome this issue by making vulnerabilites available offline on the local pc or laptop".
The database is maintained by the 'Open Source Vulnerability database' website (www.osvdb.org) and updated daily. At the last count there were well over 1500 vendors listed including all the usual suspects such as Microsoft and Cisco.
Hackerstorm.com retrieves the OSVDB database every day, re-arranges it and uploads it to their website in a format that allows it to be stored locally on PC's and laptops.
The tool also has a pretty cool user interface, it runs within a web browser and is based entirely on flash. Virtually all browsers have flash installed and becuase it is independent to operating system and browser type, the database can be viewed on any type of machine so long as it has a web browser with flash.
Tim mehmet says: "it was important to us that the tool be based on flash, firstly because the tool looks so good, its really very cool, secondly, we are pretty lazy, we did'nt want to maintain a free tool for multiple systems, browsers, languages etc, it really is too much work and in this day and age there is no need for producing things that way anymore!".
The tool is free to use, its freely available to download from the hackerstorm.com website. This also applies to professionals who wish to use it for work. Details can be found at http://www.hackerstorm.com.
