American dream, the one we all want, to own our own home. What a great feeling to walk in the front door of your home and know that it is yours. It is a real feeling of accomplishment, a sense of security and a dream come true.
The question isn't whether or not owning a home is rewarding, it is, however what does it really take for your to actually own your home? We like to say we own it, however on paper, it is the bank that owns our home and even though it's in our name, it's the bank that can exercise it's right to also take that home away from us should we ever fall behind in our payments. Depending on the the lenght of our mortgage on our down payment that home could be owned by the bank for 15 years, 30 and these days in some cases 40 years. At any point in that time during your mortgage life could throw a infamous curve ball and your home could be at risk.
These days with the ARMs and other such creative financing folks have used to get into their homes, like interest only mortgages etc., could be coming back to bite them. What if your mortgage payment increases 30% and refinancing, the ace in your deck, becomes a joker as you discover it isn't going to be the option you thought it was? What then? Payments that feel as though they are a wieght on your shoulders can turn ones lovely home into somewhat of a debtors prison. When you can't really live the life you want because you are too worried about paying your mortgage you have turned your home into a prison, because you are no sacrificing your life for a mortgage payment.
So, how to you beat this? Some people think that constantly pulling our their home equity is the answer, using the increasing value to bank roll other dreams and desires. This isn't always a bad strategy if you are truly bank rolling investments or projects that will return to you profits on dollars spent, however for most it's not about making money off of the deal it's about a vacation, a renovation, a new car, or a kid going to college, so there is no actual cash return,and you have successfully increased in your mortgage.
Obviously the more you can put down the better your mortgage, however that also means having disposable income to where you can save it and put a chunk down on the table. Why do you think 100% financing has become to popular? Most people don't have disposable income. So that may be a sound strategy, however in principle in most cases not a realistic one.
So, without getting into the ins and outs of various scenarios, all with different outcomes, pros and cons, the one constant that I can see in this is the power that comes with not only buying but owning your home as quickly as possible.
How would things change for you if you could pay off your mortgage within 24 or 36 months? What could you be doing with all of that additional money. When you are ready to let go of the tried and true that will keep you in a mortage and tied to your debts and start having your money work for you instead of you working for it.
Does this sound like a lovely daydream to you? Well stop dreaming because it is possible and people are doing it every day. Regular people with no special training or skills just desire and follow through.

Do you really want to own your home? Or perhaps purchase your very first one and pay it off quickly? This is a real option for real people to do just that. If you are a true skeptic and can't get out of your own way, this will not be an option for you likewise if you are "desperate" to find a way out of an upside down situation, because in both cases you probably will not see the big picture and that will stop you from ever taking any real action.
