This New Web Site Offers Information on Computer Spyware.

Spyware is a software programs that does things like collects personal data and information, or changes the configuration of your computer, normally without the computer owner knowing it is on the computer and running or giving permission to be loaded.

For example:  A person might sign up for something free like a music service, but pays for the service by agreeing to receive certain ads rather than giving the company money.  In the terms and conditions it may have said that the company providing the service is allowed to track the computer’s online activities to determine which ads to show.  So people need to know what they are agreeing to when they download a program or sign up for a service or anything for that matter.

Another tricky way unwanted spyware or other programs get loaded on a computer is to install the software during the installation of other software the computer operator may want.  Sometimes at the end of a license agreement or privacy statement it may say the computer operator agrees to allow this to happen.
