Pet franchises: a fast growing sector [author:Franchise Direct Public time:Jun 29, 2006] |

The pet industry has made a lot of progress over the last decade and is set for further growth, with many franchises capitalising on this trend.
A range of opportunities are available for people who want to work with pets, with the security that a franchise will provide the business structure, training and extra support if needed, enabling franchisees to get on with looking after domestic animals.
These services have been established and developed on the back of increased pet ownership and spending on grooming and products for them.
According to the American Pet Products Manufacturing Association, more than 60 per cent of US households own at least one pet, with most of these being dogs or cats. This is an increase of five per cent from around 15 years ago.
The organisation estimated pet expenditure in the US to be close to $36 billion in 2005, up from $34.4 billion in 2004, with this increase expected to continue at a rate of around five per cent annually over the next few years.
In addition, recent industry figures from the UK state that the pet products and services market has increased by more than 30 per cent over the last six years, with annual spending estimated to be £3.8 billion.
Reasons given by experts for this growth include younger couples taking longer to settle down and have families, with many getting pets and treating them like children.
Another is an increase in working hours meaning that pet owners find themselves spending less time with their pets and therefore they bring in pet service companies to make sure their pet is kept in good condition.
One franchiser which provides a range of pet services is Fetch! Pet Care. It provides pets with daily visits and care, in-home overnight sitting, taxi services and special products to clean fur and teeth and to maintain their health.
Others focus on one specific aspect, as in the case of Oscar Pet Foods, where franchisees provide customers with tailored food for their pet that is nutritional and healthy.
There are also a number of franchises that specifically focus on dogs. These include the Dog Walking Company that will enable people to keep their dog active even if they are busy or at work and Dial-A-Dog-Wash, which offers dog clipping and ID chip services as well as washing and grooming.
As long as potential franchisees ensure they do thorough research, they could make a significant amount of money working with animals they love.
