Don't move my ICONs
[author:Daniel Uitti Public time:Mar 9, 2006]

Sometimes a whole year goes by before I visit some of my customers; who are small businesses.  By then, the computer is riddled with SpyWare, the Anti-virus is way out of date; and many Windows Updates are needed to improve security.  I will empty the trash and Internet Temporary Files and other off-line content.    Sometimes there are other things wrong with the computer, and re-test is often necessary to ensure that everything is still operating as it should.   Updates can introduce new problems to the system.

Many people that have used computers for years still follow a step-by-step process to accomplish their tasks.  Wizards simply don't look easy, even though the steps are simplified.   It is simply beyond their step-by-step thinking.  If everything is done with a Wizard, then that process should always be exactly the same.

I often hear the statement.  "Don't move my Icons".  With many of these clients, I will take the time to demonstrate that the computer is operating as it did before.

But this is "many people", not all.   A dozen years from now, this will be "some people" and the "many people" will really understand the computer and have the flexibility to utilize program Wizards to accomplish new tasks.  The digital divide will be between those that are flexible enough to adapt to newly developed wizards, and the people that get stuck with quickly out-dated methods and processes.   So computer literacy levels will have the "raised bar".  The wizards and built-in help systems are supposed to keep people "above the bar".

I started to learn about computes at a ripe old age.  I was already 25 years old.  Computers in 1978 were mere tinker toys compared to the computers of today.  My first computers were microprocessor based with single process operating systems.  All of the programs that I wrote in those early days were the simplest series of steps that became a part of a larger system.  Major changes took place on an annual basis.  I have had to keep up.

Today's computer has single Icons on the desktop that initiate extremely complex, multi-tasking and network based programming, where the data is shared with many others. .   The AOL Icon represents nearly a dozen separate program entities.  For the user, it means website, e-mail, Instant Messenger, chat rooms, Music and movie downloads.  But it also means anti-spam, anti-virus, anti-SpyWare, computer security and firewall.  The AOL program of just two years ago did not have as many functions and features.  This means that the AOL user has new things to learn.

Once people have embraced the computer age, they should work to stay above the bar and "Never give up".  The revolution is taking place at a fast pace.  To some, the steps from Windows 95 to Windows 98 to Windows XP were a slow migration through a decade.  To others, the changes ran at full gallop.  Yet, others were using the same set of programs during the decade, and missed the point of the activities in the Window behind the application.
