Software & Websites that are Beginner Friendly
[author:Daniel Uitti Public time:Jan 4, 2006]

Here are some problems that cause new people to fall into the trap of viruses, SpyWare or Malware.

- Popup Windows, where Cancel or Close do not close the window
- Look-alive Anti-virus messages
- Phony SpyWare detection warnings
- Phony Windows Update messages

Even fairly advanced users can be tricked by look-alike popup warnings.  Pop-up windows also cause big problems to handicapped individuals.   These people might be using a screen reader program to help them with visual impairments.  Others might be distracted beyond their comprehension level.  Future standards that cover the American Disabilities Act might disallow all possible pop-up window distractions.

New software should be developed that avoids unsolicited pop-up windows and dialog boxes. These techniques might be utilized to properly accommodate new or handicapped users.

- Incorporate a status area of the in-focus window
- Further utilize the Status Bar at the bottom of each window.
- Minimize the use of multiple windows
- Minimize the use of solicited pop-up windows and dialog boxes.
- Utilize new Task Bar messaging techniques

Problems and misunderstanding often discourages new users from engaging the full use of the computer and internet.  It is not enough to say that a person can enjoy savings and have better access to information on goods and services.  Government services should be able to provide quality access to public information, but viruses, SpyWare and Malware can prevent personal access by building higher than normal barriers.
