Arcadia, California (September 25, 2005)—Contemporary MicroSystems has released a line of 8-port and 16-port console KVM switches built into a 1 rack unit slide-out keyboard tray with flip-up LCD screen. They are designed to to allow IT professionals to administer their rack servers without sacrificing rack space. The units are delivered to you assembled and ready to install in industry-standard racks and enclosures.
In a typical data center, server racks consist of several different computer systems, it is important that they can be administered from a central console. This is where the console switch can prove invaluable, since it enables the keyboard, mouse and monitor to be switched between the various individual computers. Each combines a 8- or 16-port KVM switch, keyboard, LCD monitor and touchpad — all in a mere 1U of rack space. The KVM console switch lets you control up to 128 PCs or servers by daisy-chaining additional 16-port KVM switches. It supports hot plugging of systems and features auto-scanning of connected systems and systems on daisy chained installations. It has an 8-character password security feature that ensures only authorized users can view and control connected PCs. The convenient and easy-to-operate KVM switch controls all ports using keyboard control buttons or the mouse-driven OSD (On-Screen Display) menus.
The rack console uses a notebook style clamshell design to save valuable rack space. The flat panel LCD flips up for use and folds down for storage. The SMK-590S17 includes a 17-inch SXGA LCD panel and a 16-port KVM switch. The SMK-580S17 and SMK-580X15 are 8-port KVM units with 17" and 15" LCDs respectively.
The SMK-590S17 is available for $1675 US. The SMK-580S17 is available for $1395 US, and the SMK-580X15 is priced at $1225 US.
