Children's Website Hacked by Porn Sites [author:Author/Computer Illustrator, Bill Dallas Lewis Public time:Feb 16, 2005] |
|
On January, 28 of this year, Author/Computer Illustrator, Bill Dallas Lewis received an email from a total stranger alerting him that when she went to his site, Silly Billy’s World was attempting to open a web site called missbabes.com. The emailer added that she didn’t think Mr. Lewis would want children’s site visitors to see such smut unexpectedly.
Mr. Lewis immediately visited his site. Sure enough, when attempting to open each and every page on his site, his browser was attempting to go to porn sites.
Mr. Lewis contacted his web host, affinity.com and was instantly connected with technical support. Affinity’s staff found a combination of PHP, JavaScript and Applets that had been added to his pages, and placed among his internet files on his site.
Mr. Lewis, fluent in html and other web languages worked for many hours getting rid of the problems. Now his site is back, and Affinity has assured him that strict, security measures have been set in place to prevent this from happening again.
The real problem is that Mr. Lewis is an experienced internet programmer. For the millions of web sites that exist, most sites are developed by contractors, thus thousands of good people and organizations such as schools, businesses and churches with sites, would have no idea how to eliminate the unwanted code to restore the original content.
Mr. Lewis, with degrees from Dartmouth and Ohio State stated, “I’ve worked with kids for years. I teach them computer graphics and write stories for them. Why target me?”
He added, “The bad thing is that this could happen to anybody. People put everything on the line to have a web presence, and one hacker can ruin their lives or business’ in one hour.”
Mr. Lewis added that he is now talking with the FBI to see what can be done.
