How it works:
Private Disk creates one or more virtual encrypted disks on your hard drive and/or removable drive. Once a user creates a virtual encrypted disk, that encrypted disk is assigned a new drive letter and appears to the user like any other system drive (like the A: or C: drive). When the disk is mounted, the data is automatically encrypted and decrypted when the user writes or reads this data respectively. The program transparently encrypts and decrypts all data stored on the encrypted disk with no performance penalty. When the encrypted disk is unmounted, either manually or by logging out of Windows, the secure data stored on the encrypted disk becomes completely unreadable and undetectable by the operating system.
To decrypt the disk, simply insert the smart card/USB flash drive and type in correct PIN code (and, if biometrics is enabled, use the fingerprint scanner to authenticate). After successful authentication there's nothing else to worry about. All encryption and decryption processes are automated and transparent. After the smart card/USB flash drive is disconnected, the encrypted disk is completely secure. The only way to unlock and view the encrypted drive contents is to once again log in with your smart card/ USB flash drive and PIN code. Without the USB token/smart card, correct PIN, and (optionally) successful biometric authentication the encrypted hard disk space is completely unreadable.
